Fatal Crash Investigation in the Hickory Grove Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, December 4, 2023) Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash in the Hickory Grove Division.

 

On Saturday, December 2, 2023, at approximately 8:57 p.m., Hickory Grove officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injury in the 8300 block of Pence Road.  Upon arrival, officers located a 2004 Gold Mercury Grand Marquis and a 2017 Gray Honda CRV both with extensive front-end damage.  The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene.  MEDIC transported the driver of the Honda, Ann Stewart Bryan (DOB: 02/03/1949), to Atrium Health Main where she was pronounced deceased.

 

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and DWI Task Force responded to the scene, along with Crime Scene Search to conduct their investigation.  The preliminary investigation indicates the Mercury, driven by, Daizah Breon Gibson (DOB: 10/22/1999), was traveling northbound on Pence Road when she crossed the center line and struck the Honda head-on.  Ms. Gibson sustained serious injuries and was transported by MEDIC to Atrium Health Main.

 

Impairment is not believed to be a factor for Ms. Bryan, however, toxicology results are pending.

 

Ms. Gibson has been charged with reckless driving and driving left of center.  Detectives with the CMPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit have also obtained a Felony Death by Motor Vehicle warrant against Ms. Gibson.  The warrant will be served upon her release from the hospital.

 

Ms. Bryan’s next of kin has been notified of her death.
