Fatal Crash Investigation in the Hickory Grove Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2026) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are conducting a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Hickory Grove Division.
On Friday, July 31, at approximately 4:50 a.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries involving a bicyclist in the 8800 block of Albemarle Road. Upon arrival, officers located a bicyclist, Kenneth Stiltner, 53, lying on the roadway with life-threatening injuries. Nearby the bicycle, officers located a GMC Acadia with front end damage. MEDIC transported Mr. Stiltner to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. Members of Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. The Charlotte Fire Department also responded to the scene.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the GMC was traveling west in the left westbound lane on Albemarle Rd while Mr. Stiltner was riding his bicycle east in the left westbound lane on Albemarle Rd. The two were involved in a head on collision resulting in Mr. Stiltner being ejected from his bicycle.
Mr. Stiltner was not wearing a helmet, and his bicycle was not equipped with a front headlight at the time of the collision.
On Tuesday, Aug. 11, Mr. Stiltner was pronounced deceased due to injuries sustained in the collision.
The victim’s next of kin has been notified of his death.
