Case Update: Fatal Crash Investigation in the Central Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, March 20, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit presented this case to the Mecklenburg County Magistrate and obtained a warrant for the arrest of Briona Jackson, 33, for misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Before officers served the warrant, Ms. Jackson turned herself in to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.

Mr. Willis’ next of kin have been notified of this development.

The investigation into this crash is active and ongoing. Charlotte, N.C. – (Sunday, March 16, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal motor vehicle crash in the Central Division. 

On Friday, March 14, 2025, at 11:53 p.m., officers responded to a motor vehicle crash with injuries involving a moped in the 600 block of Graham St. in the Central Division.  The Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded to the scene. Upon arrival, officers located a moped and its rider in the roadway with serious injuries. A Dodge Charger with damage to the passenger side was on scene. MEDIC pronounced the moped rider Leon Willis, 59, deceased on scene. 

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit and DWI Task Force responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. Members of Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and to collect physical evidence. The preliminary investigation indicates the moped was traveling north on Graham Street when a Dodge Charger, driven by Briona Jackson, 33, turned left into the path of the moped, driven by Willis. Jackson was not injured in the collision.

Speed and impairment do not appear to be factors at this time.

Mr. Willis next of kin has been notified of his death.
