Fatal Crash Investigation -- 9400 block of Old Concord Road

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, April 15, 2023) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal collision involving a train that struck a bicyclist in the University City Division.

 

On Friday, April 14, 2023, at approximately 07:00 a.m., University City Division officers responded to the 9400 block of Old Concord Road in reference to a bicyclist that was struck by a train on the train tracks. Once on scene, officers located a passenger Amtrak train that had stopped on the northbound tracks. They also located a bicycle that had been struck and the victim who was lying on the tracks. The victim, Joshua Mallory (DOB: 08/14/1991), was pronounced deceased on scene from the injuries that were sustained in this crash.

 

The preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Mallory was riding his bicycle on the northbound tracks and was over 900 feet from McLean Road along the railroad tracks. The train engineer saw Mr. Mallory and sounded the horn multiple times and began to brake. However, the train could not stop in time, and Mr. Mallory did not step off the tracks. Mr. Mallory was then struck by the train and received fatal injuries from the collision.

 

Alcohol use is suspected for Mr. Mallory, and toxicology results are pending.

 

The victim’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

 

The investigation into this crash is active and ongoing.
