Case Update: Homicide Investigation in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, June 2, 2025) – As a result on continued investigation, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) detectives identified Malcom Smith, 29, as a suspect and obtained warrants for his arrest.

On Thursday, May 29, CMPD’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team (VCAT) detectives arrested Mr. Smith, for his role in the homicide of Deeaudrey Copeland.

Mr. Smith was transported to the Law Enforcement Center (LEC) where he was interviewed by detectives. At the conclusion of the interviews, Smith was transported to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with:

  • 1st Degree Murder
  • Attempted Murder
  • Assault with a Deadly Weapon Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury
  • Three counts of Shooting into an Occupied Vehicle

The family of Mr. Copeland has been notified of the arrest.

Mr. Copeland’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

Homicide Investigation in the North Tryon Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Saturday, May 24, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a homicide investigation in the 4000 block of North Graham Street in the North Tryon Division.

On Saturday, May 24, shortly before 8:30 p.m., officers responded to an Assault with a Deadly Weapon call for service in the 4000 block of North Graham Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a victim with a gunshot wound. MEDIC transported the victim to a local hospital where they were pronounced deceased.

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene to conduct an investigation, and Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. Representatives from CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services and CFD also responded to assist.
