CMPD Arrests Suspect After Peaceful Resolution to Overnight Barricade

Charlotte, N.C. – (Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026) – Officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) Team, working alongside CMPD SWAT negotiators, successfully de-escalated and apprehended an overnight barricade situation and safely took a suspect into custody in the 900 block of West Sugar Creek Road in the North Tryon Division.
On Monday, Aug. 31, 2026, shortly before 5 p.m., CMPD officers located a vehicle matching the description of a vehicle of interest in connection with a shooting that occurred in the North Tryon Division on Saturday, Aug. 29. The shooting left one individual with life-threatening injuries.
A short time later, officers observed an individual matching the description of a person of interest in the shooting investigation exit a nearby apartment. The individual then returned inside the apartment and barricaded himself inside, prompting CMPD’s SWAT team to respond and assist with the incident.
Members of CMPD’s SWAT Team worked to ensure the safety of those in the immediate area and evacuated surrounding apartments. At the same time, SWAT Negotiators actively began communication efforts and worked to de-escalate the situation.
During the course of negotiations, officers discovered that the suspect had a firearm inside the apartment. At approximately 12:26 a.m., the suspect fired his weapon at officers from inside his apartment. No injuries were reported by officers or the suspect, and no CMPD officers fired their weapons.
The communication efforts with the subject continued overnight and into Tuesday morning to attempt to bring this incident to a peaceful conclusion.
At approximately 4:25 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 1, 2026, the suspect, identified as Jerricho Alexander, 33, peacefully surrendered to SWAT officers. Alexander was taken into custody and charged with the following:
- Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Kill Inflicting Serious Injury
- Attempted Murder
- Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Government Official (5 counts)
- Possession of a Firearm by Felon
Officers have spoken with all parties involved and are not looking for any additional victims or suspects.
“I’m proud of the men and women of CMPD and the way they handled this incident from start to finish,” said CMPD Deputy Chief Jacquelyn Bryley. “Through diligent investigative work, they identified and located a suspect connected to a shooting. When he barricaded himself, our SWAT team and negotiators went to work. Our officers demonstrated tremendous professionalism throughout the incident. Even when shots were fired at officers, they remained focused on de-escalation and continued working to communicate with the suspect. Their commitment to a safe resolution ultimately led to the suspect surrendering peacefully, which is exactly the outcome we work toward in these situations.”
Representatives from the Charlotte Fire Department and MEDIC also responded and assisted throughout the night.
