Published on December 07, 2023

Charlotte, N.C. – (Thursday, December 7, 2023) – Today, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) released body-worn camera (BWC) video of an incident where an officer was stabbed in the head/neck area by a suspect and an officer discharged his service weapon, killing the suspect. This incident occurred on Sunday, August 20, 2023. The footage was court-ordered for release following a petition.

On Sunday, August 20, 2023, shortly before 8 a.m., officers responded to an Assist Medic call for service. When officers arrived on scene, they heard sounds of a disturbance inside an apartment, followed by gunshots. Officers forced entry into the apartment and were met by the suspect, identified as Peter Corey (DOB 06/22/1995). Mr. Corey was combative and armed with a firearm. Officers observed the firearm in Mr. Corey’s hand and gave repeated commands for him to drop the firearm. The weapon fell out of Mr. Corey’s hand and officers moved to separate the subject from the weapon on the ground. An altercation ensued during which Mr. Corey stabbed Officer Shawn McMichael in the head/neck area with a knife. Officer McMichael suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

During the encounter, Officer Tyler Bourque perceived a deadly threat and discharged his service weapon striking Mr. Corey. MEDIC responded to render emergency aid to Mr. Corey and Officer McMichael. Mr. Corey was pronounced deceased on scene. The female victim who suffered a gunshot wound prior to officers arriving on scene was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Multiple firearms and knives were recovered from inside the apartment.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NCSBI) is the lead investigative agency in this incident.

I am so proud of the lifesaving, heroic actions of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s officers during this incident”, said Chief Johnny Jennings. “We routinely train for situations like this involving active violence. Officers Bourque and McMichael rose to their training, putting their lives in extreme danger for the sake of the protection of innocent life. Police officers are never able to predict the circumstances that they are about to encounter. This case highlights the dangers they face and how quickly a threat can present itself. I am thankful that Officer McMichael was able to fully recover from the serious injury that he sustained, and I pray for the continued safety of every CMPD officer.”
