Phone numbers linked to active billing accounts will receive phone calls, texts, and emails when there is an emergency alert (water outage, water quality concern, or sewer spill in recreational waters nearby) affecting the service address. Renters, tenants,  spouses, roommates, and property managers that do not have their contact information in our billing system can register to receive alerts. 

What is an emergency alert?

  1. Any water outage (planned or unplanned)
  2. Sanitary sewer spills into 
    1. recreational waters (notify the immediate lake cove the spill is in and the next downstream cove) or
    2. 1,000 gallons into a surface water (downstream from the spill)
  3. Any water quality concerns (i.e. boil water, do not use, or low water pressure advisory)
  4. Lane closure or road closure due to an emergency water main break.

How soon will I receive an alert?

Our goal is to inform you before you are affected or as soon as possible. Please call 311 and report a water emergency if you notice a water service outage and didn't receive an alert.

 

Do I need to register to receive alerts?

You do not need to register if you have an active account with Charlotte Water and your phone number is accurate. If so, you will receive emergency alerts.

You can register to receive non-emergency alerts and if you want to receive alerts for multiple addresses (home, work, family member, apartment, tenant).

 

Should a business sign up to receive alerts?

Yes. Also consider more than one person registering to receive the alerts or a general email address multiple people can access.

 

What information will be provided in my water outage alerts?

Estimated outage location and duration. We will also send an alert when water service is restored (only text and email after 9:00 pm).

 

Can I unsubscribe from receiving alerts?

Sure. If you didn't register, follow the prompts to unsubscribe when you receive a message. To stop text alerts press STOP to stop future alerts.

If you registered, simply log in to your account and update your notification preferences or delete your account. You can also call 311 (704-336-7600) and request to be unsubscribed. Passwords can be reset from this page as well.

 

How do I update my phone number or address?

If you registered, please log in to your account and update your preferences.

If you need to update your phone number, text number or email address we have on fill with your account / water bill, please call 311 or 704-336-7600. Account holder contact information is updated daily.

 

How can I opt-out of receiving phone calls?

Phone numbers linked to active billing accounts will receive phone calls and texts when there is a water outage or water quality concern affecting the service address. Other emergency notifications are listed above. If you would prefer not to receive phone calls or text messages please text STOP to the message or 0 at the end of the phone call.

 

What if my phone number or email address changes?

If you opted-in / registered to receive alerts, please log in to update your profile page. If the phone number you provided to 311 for your billing account is no longer valid, please call 311 or 704-336-7600 to update your billing phone number. Phone numbers are updated nightly.

 

How will text messages show up on my mobile phone?

Text messages will come from #89361 and 87844. You can add these codes as a contact in your address book and label them as CLTWater Alerts for easy identification. It is possible that other text services may use the same number.

 

Are there other ways to register if I do not have access to a computer?

Yes you can call 311 (or 704-336-7600) and ask to be registered for non-emergency water alerts.

 

Will my contact information be shared?

No. We will only use information for water and wastewater related alerts.
