Historic Districts

The new Charlotte Historic District Design Standards were adopted on December 8, 2021. Cases submitted on or after December 8th are subject to the new HDC Design Standards below. Cases submitted prior to that date are considered under the previous HDC Design Standards available on the HDC main page

HDC Design Standards


​The Charlotte Historic District Design Standards were updated and adopted at the end of 2021. These updates included new information about murals, multi-family and commercial properties. This update also incorporated the previously adopted mid-century guidelines and Oaklawn Park information into the main body of the Standards along with edits to clarify the original document adopted in 2017. 

The Historic District Commission (HDC) and staff have been working on these edits via public meetings since 2019. Information about public participation opportunities and the adoption timeline is shown below.

Public participation was held from October 6, 2021 to December 1, 2021. Participation was via public meetings or submitting the online response form with any comments and questions.

The public hearing and adoption of the new HDC Design Standards took place prior to the regularly scheduled HDC monthly meetings listed below. Meetings were held via WebEx with link information provided at least 48 hours prior to the meeting.
