Employ an Off-Duty Officer

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department authorizes its police officers to provide law enforcement related services; such as traffic direction and business security in exchange for a fee paid by the employer. Officer Eric Crawford coordinates Secondary Employment and Lt. Dondi Pogue and Officer Matt Sammis coordinate special events.

Secondary Employment
Officer Crawford handle police staffing for all requests that do not involve a street closure, such as security or traffic direction for a business, shopping center, or homeowners association. The Secondary Employment Agreement will provide the necessary information for hiring an off-duty officer. The person acknowledging the agreement must check the box at the end of each section indicating that they understand and agree to the terms of the agreement. Make sure the application section of the agreement is complete and thorough to avoid delays in processing your request. You may also email additional documentation that may pertain to your request, such as; ABC permits, maps, plans, etc. Make sure you put the employer name at the top of each page.

The agreement(PDF, 442KB) can be faxed to 704-336-6892, or emailed to the Secondary Employment office at secondaryemploymentadministration@cmpd.org in order to process your request. We cannot address the approval of, or staffing level for your request until we have received this paperwork.

Special Events
Lt. Pogue and Officer Sammis handle all police staffing of special events that require street closings, such as parades, street festivals, charity walks, and foot races.  They will be assigned the event once you have submitted the Parade Permit Application to the City Department of Transportation.
