Officer Arrested in Domestic Violence Incident

Charlotte, N.C. - (Monday, May 15, 2023) –The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) Internal Affairs Division is conducting an internal investigation regarding the arrest of CMPD Officer Nakeya Nelson, after a domestic violence incident that resulted in Officer Nelson’s and another subject’s arrest outside of the CMPD jurisdiction.

 

The incident happened Sunday, May 14, in Wrightsville Beach. Ms. Nelson was charged with Assault and Battery. Wrightsville Beach Police Department is the arresting agency and any further questions on the circumstances of the incident should be directed to its Public Information Office.

 

Ms. Nelson will be placed on administrative assignment pending the outcome of the CMPD Internal Affairs Investigation. Ms. Nelson was hired on 10/27/2014 and is currently assigned to the Education Outreach & Youth Services Division as a School Resource Officer with a current assignment at Randolph Middle School.

 

Statement from Chief Jennings:

“Yesterday, one of our officers was arrested during a domestic violence situation in New Hanover County. The CMPD will continue to gather all the facts about this incident, and we will allow Internal Affairs to conduct a full investigation. Our officers and their actions are scrutinized heavily in and out of the uniform because of their profession. However, we hold them to a high standard, and any time their actions fall short of those standards, they will be held accountable.”
