Fatal Hit and Run Investigation in the Metro Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, Dec. 1, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal hit and run collision involving a vehicle and a pedestrian that occurred in the Metro Division.

On Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025, at approximately 5:43 p.m., Metro Division officers responded to a hit and run crash with personal injury call for service near the 1200 block of North Tryon St.

Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive pedestrian, Howard Charles Pomnitz III, 56, in the roadway. MEDIC also responded and pronounced Mr. Pomnitz deceased at the scene.

The vehicle that struck Mr. Pomnitz, a black Chevrolet Cruze, was last seen traveling north on North Tryon Street.

Detectives with the Major Crash Investigation Unit, DWI Task Force and Motorcycle Unit responded to the scene to conduct their investigation. Members of Crime Scene Search (CSS) responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence.

Speed did not appear to be a factor for the vehicle involved in the crash, and it is unknown if impairment was a factor for the driver of the vehicle that struck Mr. Pomnitz.

It is also unknown if impairment was a factor for Mr. Pomnitz; Toxicology results are pending.

Mr. Pomnitz’s next of kin has been notified of his death.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing. As additional information develops, it will be released by the CMPD's Public Affairs Division.
