Fatal Crash Investigation in the South Division

Charlotte, N.C. – (Monday, Dec. 8, 2025) – Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s (CMPD) Major Crash Investigation Unit are investigating a fatal crash in the South Division.

On Monday, Nov. 17, at approximately 2:41 p.m., officers along with Charlotte Fire and MEDIC responded to the 4200 block of Sharon View Road in reference to a single vehicle collision with injuries.

Upon arrival, officers located a Honda SUV off to the left of the roadway. The driver, John Joseph McLaughlin, 85, was located in the driver seat alert and conscious. McLaughlin sustained injuries to his head, MEDIC transported him to the hospital.

On Saturday, Nov. 29, McLaughlin succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the hospital.

The preliminary investigation indicates that McLaughlin ran off the roadway to the left striking a street sign and a tree.

Speed and impairment are not suspected factors.
