This segment extends the Little Sugar Creek Greenway 2.2 miles from Huntingtowne Farms Park to I-485. This is a combined stream restoration and greenway construction project. The stream restoration will change the banks of Little Sugar Creek to reduce erosion and improve water quality.
This greenway segment is part of the Cross Charlotte Trail, which will eventually connect to Cabarrus County to the South Carolina state line. This greenway is also part of the Carolina Thread Trail, a regional network of greenways, trails and blueways that reaches 15 counties in two states.
The Little Sugar Creek Greenway Master Plan, created in 2004, and the Comprehensive Park & Recreation Master Plan Update, completed in April 2015, recommended the completion of Little Sugar Creek Greenway to the South Carolina border as a high priority. The Little Sugar Creek Master Plan comprehensively describes and illustrates the long-range improvements for the 15-mile greenway, which is a portion of the Cross Charlotte Trail.
