​This segment extends the Little Sugar Creek Greenway 2.2 miles from Huntingtowne Farms Park to I-485. This is a combined stream restoration and greenway construction project.  The stream restoration will change the banks of Little Sugar Creek to reduce erosion and improve water quality.​

This greenway segment is part of the Cross Charlotte Trail, which will eventually connect t​o Cabarrus County to the South Carolina state line. This greenway is also part of the Carolina Thread Trail​, a regional network of greenways, trails and blueways that reaches 15 counties in two states.

The Little Sugar Creek Greenway Master Plan, created in 2004, and the Comprehensive Park & Recreation Master Plan Update, completed in April 2015, recommended the completion of Little Sugar Creek Greenway to the South Carolina border as a high priority. The Little Sugar Creek Master Plan comprehensively describes and illustrates the long-range improvements for the 15-mile greenway, which is a portion of the Cross Charlotte Trail. ​

​​Many public meetings were conducted to receive community input on the character of the corridor and the amenities and access to be provided. A steering committee, composed of a cross-section of elected officials, private citizens and Mecklenburg County staff were assembled to help inform the planning process. In addition, a needs assessment survey revealed that 64 percent of all residents felt the role of greenways as a connected network of walking, biking and nature trails was very important. More greenways​ are needed to enhance connectivity that will be provided by the Cross Charlotte Trail.​
